Reflections on the Friday meeting - We talked about more issues and learned more information about Darfur and its issues. There were no problems at all, we got a lot of things straightened out and it just was overall a good meeting. We really just talked about the issues and everything & there’s nothing else I can mention because there’s not much to say.
I know this is not really much but so far, we are doing good and processing smoothly; we just need more things to be put in order for our plan & that shouldn't be a problem but it might take some time. I think we will talk more about the plan, what we need to do and participate in such fund-raising, walking and donating events, which we can easily do.
To close this up, we should be okay for another couple of meetings to fully set our plan so we can do it & have the proper guidance for this.

The Empire of the Sun.
Kateelynn K.
English 3-4.
Jim, once a rich, spoiled kid, has fully transformed into a strong, physically and emotionally affected teenager after the war. You can see he was never the same again, not even if things were the same after the war – once something big happens, it leaves a huge impact on the person and he will need a lot of time to get over what happened.
Before the war, Jim was a spoiled, rich kid with a huge heart for airplanes. He was only this way because he was young and didn’t know how to be serious yet. He was easily fascinated with many things, just like many little children normally would. He constantly liked to play and have fun with his toy airplanes. He wanted to be a pilot so bad, he was even obsessed with the airplanes he sees and he even knew the names for them too. Everything changed when the war bombed into Jim’s homeland.
During the war, Jim and many others were forced to go to the camps. There was a big change in him as of he wasn’t rich or spoiled anymore. There wasn’t anything luxury about the camps, he had to live with the lousy food, people dying from many illnesses, and poorly made shelters. It was a living nightmare to him but he managed to stay healthy and strong after all these years. He developed a plan of running the errands around and helping people, that was what kept him going. When he had to leave the camp with the others, he carried his suitcase, enclosed with his favorite picture, the airplane toy and magazines. He later decided to throw the suitcase into the ocean – that definitely showed he was different and probably wanted to move on.
After the war, he came back to the camp and this time, he was almost like the kid he was once before the war even started. He would ride a bicycle all over the place, keep things perfect and tidy like his house was always so before the war and just have some fun until the American army came and got him (not in a bad way). He was sent to a camp for the children so parents could come and pick up their children. He had forgotten how his mother and father looked like after all these years so he didn’t recognize them at all when they came to him. This shows he was never the same again & he will need a lot of therapy and time to get over the war, the camps and everything.
In conclusion, you can see that Jim changed from a rich, spoiled kid, to a teenager, with a different attitude. We all can assume that Jim is going to always think about the war and how it changed him. I’m 100% sure he will keep everything to himself and just go on with his life. Like I said, once something big happens, it’s going to leave a huge impact on the person and even change the person forever.

Darfur Reflections .
It's all set; we have a plan set for the next year. I will start with the first service-learning meeting - we introduced ourselves and named our reasons why we are in this Darfur group. I said I joined in the group because I am concerned with many things going on in Darfur, with all the killings and lousy education. I think it's really important that we look into the issues more even if we have issues here, in America. These Darfur has nothing compared to us & we are going to make sure these people in Darfur gets what they need and want.
We then named our ideas and what we could do to help Darfur. Some of the ideas are food drives, donations, student exchange and many more. We knew we couldn't help Darfur with many things but we narrowed to one subject; Stop the killings in Darfur. I wanted to go with Education, but since people get killed, how can they get educated? I think that should be our first step to help Darfur.
In the second meeting, we talked about more issues in Darfur - like, if people come out of these camps in Darfur, and they are women - they get raped. If the people are men, they get killed. That's an issue we need to try and solve with. The government in Darfur is controlling and slowly killing/taking over the Darfur people.
In closing, I can say we got a lot of things figured out but we need a little more guidance in the group & we need to know what we can do and what we can't. Overall, I think these meetings are worth it & I'm glad I joined the group because we are really doing something here instead of just sitting around and doing nothing.

English project - Ku Klux Klan.
Kaitlin Kazelis
English 3-4
In the beginning, the purpose of this Ku Klux Klan was never political or even racist at all; it was meant to play pranks on the people living in the county and just have fun with it. However, the pranks had a negative effect on people. For example, the members liked to wear the spooky clothes and appear in the middle of the night to frighten the liberated slaves and the representatives of the Union.
The Ku Klux Klan consisted of white supremacy, anti-Semitism, anti-Catholicism, racism, homophobia, and anti-Communism. The Klan believed in violence, terrorism, lynching and cross burning to oppress African Americans. Many independent groups opposing the Civil Rights Movement and desegregation have used the name, Ku Klux Klan as well.
As more members join the Klan, the organization had moved to many southern states such as Florida, Alabama, Tennessee and Mississippi. It is said that the Klan threatened, shot, stabbed and hanged. The Klan also ‘took care’ of Negroes who had gained land and prospered. Even those who made inflammatory speeches or talked about equal rights.
In the 1920’s, the Ku Klux Klan had more than two million members, and was at the peak of its power and influence. The city of Chicago had the largest number of members, but then the Klan was starting to fade as it got late in the 1920’s. This shows that there probably weren’t a lot of Ku Klux Klan members in Chicago at the time of Bigger and his story. To close this up, we should all know that the Klan never started out as a racist/political organization, it really was meant for the Klansmen to just play pranks on people and scare the daylight out of them.

NHD reflections.
As I look back at the National History Day, it was stressful and also a waste of time. I have to say, my classes kept giving me more work, projects and homework for me to complete, and then, there’s the NHD too. It just completely took my focus off everything else and went straight to NHD. It was pretty difficult to balance out both classes and NHD. Also, because of my focus on NHD, I ended up getting a D on a science project, which also pulled down my science grade for the second report card. Even though I got everything done in the end, all I got from NHD was knowledge on a topic that I can't even do anything about or even really make an importance out of it. My goal for next year is to start my project early and get everything done before everyone starts doing their NHD projects. That way, I don’t have to take my focus off the classes and put it on NHD just so I can pass ONE class. After everything, I plan to keep researching on Child Labor and reveal more information. At least it was a Mission Accomplished.
- update on may 26, 2008.
I just found out that I didn't win the NHD competition & I also found out that some other competitors had used my topic in the NHD competition after the city and state competitions - what a ripoff. No one really thought of my topic which was about child labor. I think this is just plainly a stupid competition - I'm not going to waste my time on it again but I will still do it since it is required in my school or whatever.

Chapters in the Native Son
Pages 3-13
Chapter 1 : Home
This chapter is basically about the problems Bigger face at home. In the beginning, Bigger kills a rat with his bare hands and then scares his little sister with the dead rat. This was making his mother angry and wondering why she even gave birth to him. Also, since they have no father, Bigger is somehow shown as the father of the family and also as the problem child in this chapter.
Pages 13-40
Chapter 2 : Friends
This chapter shows Bigger’s experiences within having friends and being in a gang. In this chapter, He is being talked into robbing an old man’s store, but then Bigger feels pressured because he feels like he doesn’t want to do it & he thinks he has to because he has to show he’s the man of the gang even if he feels nervous and uneasy about robbing someone.
Pages 40-44
Chapter 3 : Job
Bigger and Gus gets into a physical fight that was ended by his friends and Doc, the owner of the hangout where Bigger and his gang usually meet up at. After Bigger leaves, he has to decide whether he should face Mr. Dalton, a white, rich man that offers to give him a job. He eventually went to see him because he knew he had no choice and he needed to make money.
